This document lists all clubs which have appeared in the Football League and
FA Premier League and shows the periods they have spent in each division. The
1998-99 Play-off Finals are still outstanding, clubs which are still involved
are marked with an asterisk (*).
The divisions are designated using Roman numerals as follows
I Football League 1888-92, Division One 1892-1992, FA Premier 1992-
II Division Two 1892-1992, Division One 1992-
III Division Three 1920-21 & 1958-92, Division Three (South) 1921-58,
Division Three (North) 1921-58, Division Two 1992-
IV Division Four 1958-92, Division Three 1992-
For each club the club name is followed by the date the club joined the
league or the period(s) of membership of the League and any previous names of
the club during league membership (these are cross-referenced in the text). This
is followed by the list of divisions the club has played in and the period(s)
spent in each division. To the right of the division number is shown the total
number of seasons spent in the division with the longest consecutive period
given in square brackets. The total number of seasons spent in the League is
given to the left of the highest division played in. Membership of a
regionalised division is shown by 'n' or 's' appended to the period of
membership. Dates of transfer from one region to another are also shown.
