From season 1999-2000, seedings in UEFA club competitions have been based on team rankings. These are determined according to a team's performances in competitions over the previous 5 seasons (but excluding matches in qualifying rounds) enhanced by half of the UEFA Country Co-efficient for the country which the team is representing.
Due to the tight schedule of the UEFA Champions League Qualifying Rounds, the draws for the first two Qualifying Rounds are made together, and the draw for the 3rd Qualifying Round is made before the 2nd Qualifying Round is made. Consequently, UEFA previously awarded seedings in these rounds to clubs which qualified directly, and so a club progressing from an earlier round with a higher ranking would be unseeded. Reports suggest that UEFA will resolve this discrepancy in the draws for the 2000-01 season by ensuring that a higher ranking team progressing from a previous round will take the seeding of a lower ranked team which qualified directly. It remains to be seen how the draws will be arranged to achieve this.
In the lists of potential seeds below it is assumed that the highest rank teams will progress from each round and that the seeding for each round will be composed of the highest ranked teams in that round, whether directly qualified or winners from a previous round.
For each round the expected competitors are shown in order of highest ranked team first, the number in brackets indicates the teams position in UEFA's list of team rankings (i.e. highest ranked team is 1, second highest 2 etc.). The rules in the list of teams for each Qualifying Round and the 2nd Group-Match Stage shows the cut-off points for seeding. In each round a seeded team will be drawn against an unseeded team. In the list of teams for the 1st Group-Match Stage, the rules indicate 4 "pots", each group will consist of one team from each pot. In the Group-Match Stages teams from the same country will not be drawn in the same group.
